City Director, Waterloo

Lead TKS Waterloo program and operations.

There are not enough smart people in the world working on solving important problems. This isn't a surprise. Our school system doesn't expose young people to what's happening in the real world. The world is growing at an exponential rate as advancements in areas like Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Blockchain, Genetic Engineering, and Quantum Computing transform the way we do things. We need to focus on leveraging these new technologies to address important problems that were once thought impossible to solve. To do this, we need to expose young people to these new innovations while also helping them find their passion and purpose.

We can create more people like Elon Musk, who think big and challenge the seemingly impossible. There is a formula for developing change-makers and global leaders. Our mission at TKS is to develop the next-generation of leaders that will solve the world's most important problems. At our core, we believe that by training young people to develop a strong mindset, breadth of knowledge, and real-world skills, they will change the world. Underlying all of this is guiding them towards their passion and purpose. We are an institution that is developing the next-generation of innovators and leaders, join us.

Job Description

Your role will be to lead the Waterloo program. We have run multiple programs and have developed a clear playbook on how to execute. We're looking for someone that is highly energetic, has a passion for learning, and wants to re-imagine education. There are no set requirements for this role because we value mindset above all else. The ideal candidate has unique real-world experiences, which will help when mentoring the students.

You should expect to learn more in this role than you have ever learned in your life. You will gain deep knowledge in every significant emerging technology and science, develop a strong skill set in communication and problem solving and become a thought leader in education. The students you develop relationships with at TKS will go on to solve important problems in the world, like curing cancer or building flying taxis. You will make an impact and change the world through this role... and you'll love every second of it.

Benefits

We could be biased, but this is one of the best jobs in the world.

  • Mentor young people that will change the world.

  • Speak at conferences, be a thought leader.

  • Develop a deep understanding in new technologies and sciences.

  • You're doing something meaningful every day.

  • Re-imagine education and learning.

  • TKS sessions are on Saturday and Sunday, so you'll have flexibility Monday-Friday!

Responsibilities

You will work directly with the founders to lead TKS Waterloo. Below are some of the main responsibilities you'll own as city director.

  • Facilitate the in-person program with TKS students. The program is held on Saturday and Sunday from 9am-5pm. You will be provided with the agenda and content for the sessions and your job will be to deliver the content in an engaging way.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to TKS. Many students start projects or complex research and need guidance as they approach roadblocks or confusing problems. You will need to help them problem solve and think about how to overcome challenges they face.

  • Give feedback to TKS students on content they create. During the program, they will build slide decks, presentations, one-pagers, blog posts, podcasts, and more. Your feedback will help them improve their skills so they are ready to add value in the real world.

  • Create industry-specific opportunities. This may include hosting a speaker, setting up a themed workshop (e.g. blockchain, genomics, etc.), and organizing events (e.g. tour of Shopify office). The goal is to create experiences outside of TKS to give students exposure to the real world.

  • Build relationships with schools. All students should be aware of TKS and schools are a great way to spread the word. We also want schools to share their student's success and work with them to promote their achievements.

  • Interview students. To be accepted into TKS, students fill out an application and go through interviews. You'll need to decide which students are the right fit for the program.

  • Host information sessions. Parents and students may want a better understanding of what to expect in TKS. Organizing an information session, either online or in-person, will help people see the value of TKS and help them understand if it's the right fit for them.

  • Organize TKSummit. Every year we host a conference to change the lives of students by highlighting new innovations in technology and science. You will help build the team to execute this event and impact thousands of ambitious and curious students.
